About Us

WNC Rabbit Rescue (WNCRR) began in 2005 in response to the high number of domesticated rabbits are that no longer wanted by their human companions or that have been abandoned or abused. WNCRR is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization; however, we have not set up as a 501(c)3, so contributions are not tax-deductible.

Mission: To provide safe, loving indoor homes for domesticated rabbits through a fostering, adoption, and education network.

Rationale: Many rabbit owners initially are unaware that rabbits can live for 10-15 years and need as much care as dogs and cats. Indoor areas to be occupied by rabbits need to be bunny-proofed. Due to their fragile nature and the fact that most rabbits dislike for being lifted and carried, they generally are not ideal companions for young children. Furthermore, veterinarians who are not trained in caring for “exotic” animals often are unfamiliar with rabbit behaviors, needs, and common illnesses. There is a need for a local/regional rabbit advocacy organization that can work with rabbit owners, pet stores, shelters, and vets to provide the best care possible for area rabbits.

Goals: WNC Rabbit Rescue will seek to serve domesticated rabbits in Western North Carolina through the following activities:

Working with local shelters: WNC RR will work closely with local shelters to take in rabbits that have not been adopted and will be euthanized.

Working with rabbits and their human companions: ARR will foster rabbits in a clean, healthy, sunny space until permanent homes can be identified and the rabbits are adopted.

Working with pet stores: WNC RR will work with local pet stores to help them identify healthier rabbit foods (e.g., timothy hay-based pellets), snacks, toys, and other supplies. WNC RR also will work with stores to help them educate their customers about rabbit care and adoption – particularly around Easter.

Working with vets: WNC RR will work with regional vets experienced in rabbit health and medicine in order to provide information to rabbit owners about the veterinary resources available to them in their localities. WNCRR also will work to provide vets with new information on rabbit health as it becomes available.
