Adoption Criteria

WNC Rabbit Rescue will work to find safe, loving homes for rabbits, some of which have been neglected or abused. WNC RR will use the following criteria in its selection of new homes for rabbits:

1. All rabbits will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption (the adoption fee covers only part of this expense). For males, this will occur after their testicles have descended (about four months of age); for females, this will occur within one month of reaching six months of age. Older rabbits will be spayed/neutered as appropriate for their health.

2. New rabbit owners will sign a contract agreeing that their rabbits will live indoors. (Protected, supervised outdoor playtime during the day is fine.) Outdoor rabbits are prone to the elements, to teasing by humans, and to taunting by other animals, such as cats, dogs, opossums, and raccoons. A rabbit can become panicked and injure itself in its hutch or can die of shock – literally being scared to death. Raccoons have been known to open hutches, and bears have ripped right through them.

3. New owners must have the ability to provide their rabbits with healthy food, plenty of playtime, room to run, and any necessary medical care.

4. The rabbit’s primary caregiver must be an adult.

5. If the new rabbit owner decides that it does not want the rabbit anymore, it needs to notify WNCRR with as much advance notice as possible and return the rabbit to WNCRR.
